Yesterday I happened to switch on the television at around 6:00 am (do not ask me why) and as usual I surfed to the NDTV news channel just to see what happened in the world while i was in deep slumber. Suddenly the phrase "Breaking News" was displayed on the bottom of the screen. The news item which appeared after this phrase was the Shilpa Shetty had won the "Big Brother" contest. I used to think that only news items which are of prime importance and which are truly earth shattering are generally given the tag of "Breaking News" but now I know that whether the news item is of prime importance or not the media uses the term "Breaking News" just to gather attention.
